Resurrection Cookies
(Please Note: This activity comes with suggested Scripture readings. However, you may wish to replace those listed with your own favorites. When doing this activity with younger children, it may be helpful to mark the pages of readings, so that the passages are easy to find. Perhaps, writing/printing the passages may work even better. This activity should be done in the evening before the children go to bed, or during a time when there is the availability of an 8-10 hour block of time.)
Ingredients: 1 cup whole pecans 1tsp. vinegar 3 egg whites Pinch of salt 1 cup sugar
Also needed: wooden spoon, Bible, plastic "zipper" baggie, tape
Directions Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place pecans in zipper baggie and allow children to beat them with the wooden spoon breaking the nuts into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Together, read John 19:1-3. Measure out the 1 tsp. of vinegar. Let the children smell the vinegar. Put it into a mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the Cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Together, read John 19:28-30. Add egg whites to the vinegar. Explain that eggs represent life and that Jesus gave His life for each one of us. Together, read John 10:10-11. Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that the salt represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Together, read Luke 23: 27. So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add one cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know Him and belong to Him. Together, read Psalm 34:8 and then read John 3:16. With a mixer on high speed, beat the mixture for 11-15 minutes, until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Together, read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Put cookie sheet in the oven. Close the door and turn the oven off. Give each child a piece of tape and ask them to use it to seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Together, read Matt. 27:65-66. Explain to the children that Jesus' followers had to leave the tomb. And then, the tomb was sealed shut. Together, read John 16: 20-22. SEND THE CHILDREN TO BED. LEAVE THE OVEN. COME BACK IN 8-10 HOURS. The next morning, or upon the children's return, open the oven and give everyone a cookie! Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! Explain to the children that on the first day of the Resurrection Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Together, read Matt. 28:1-9. He has risen! Alleluia!
